More sensationalism on the ports deal with a foreign entity. Blah, blah, blah. The media needs to give us something new, instead of inciting panic.

How about the existing laws against exporting certain technology. Certainly a foreign firm is subject to these laws. In order to maintain the high level of security that we need (and don't always get) a good security system needs a certain amount of secrecy on the way it operates. If we show everyone how it works, someone can defeat it. That is the reason for confidentiality.

That is also the reason behind the non-export laws regarding technology. If an American firm were to run the operation, they would need to commit treason to help any foreign entity. Not so when we give them what they need.

Our Federal Government has put everyone in a situation of dammed if you do dammed if you don't. Give them the technology they need and we violate secrecy and federal laws. Don't and they can not do their job properly.

We live in frightening times. Live each day to the fullest. Hug your children and tell your family that you love them each day. We never know when it is our last.

We have been the world's largest arm's dealer; Bush Sr. made millions for Dow Chemical....etc.. when he supplied Hussein with chemical weapons and other military armament to fight against Ayahtollah Khomeni of Iran. Now, in Iraq the terrorists are not only the ones we are fighting but they also the ones we are trying to help. Additionally, it is fair to say that our foreign oil puchases also fund those who attack us; people who leave those engines running with those 'support our troops' stickers are just like the troops who are fighting in Iraq; the public is supporting opposing sides against itself; we will probably always be the world's largest arms dealer and then elect ourselves to be the world's fire police. Bush Sr. should have spent more time arming both dictators; can you think of a reason why Hussein got our support and not the Ayahtollah.

Timing is everything. The Ayatollah was at one time US public enemy #1. His ability to enrage people against the US and his protection of terrorists and kidnappers made him a perfect target for our government. Remember the kidnapping that occurred back then? At that time, Hussein was making more trouble in his own country than abroad (at least he was a bit secretive about the support to terrorism). Arming Iraq was the lesser of two evils. We also felt the need to take sides in the Iran-Iraq war. There is something to be said for isolationism.

We made yet another deal with the devil and now are paying for it. This country has always sold arms to whoever suits our needs at the time. Technology was always something that we used to consider more guarded. Some arms is still heavily restricted, unless you happen to be part of one of our intelligence organizations. They do pretty much what they want.

Today we supposedly have compartmentized intelligence. This means that if you are not in the small group that is actively involved in a "project", you don't know anything about it. While at first glance this seems to be a good way to protect our confidential information, it also creates a situation where there are no checks and balances. Something the government of this country was formed on to protect us from our own government. Nobody answers to anyone, and no one knows about all the black ops that occur at any given time. Each person only knows their little piece. Until something blows up in their face.

It's too bad Bush Jr. didn't read his daddy's book. Bush Sr. didn't go into Iraq because they didn't have an exit strategy. They still don't but we are there being slaughtered nevertheless. There has never been a war won against a guerilla army. History teaches some things if only we would listen.
